GIS (Geographical Information Systems)

GIS is a very powerful cartographic tool that is normally used in one of two ways. (if you want to, jump to Example Projects or What I Offer)

For illustration

Common uses are for planning applications, for construction drawings, or inclusion in reports or presentations. Good graphics can really lift a report or presentation.

For analysis

As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Quality GIS output makes it easier to understand and analyse complex scenarios.

Example Projects

- Investigation of potential sites for wave power generation in SW England and NW Scotland. GIS analysis of the wave resource, the distance from suitable ports for installation and support vessels, and proximity to connection points. Graphical output for report

- Grid Capacity study of Tees Valley. Study of grid capacity for both demand and generation on land in the Tees Valley. Graphical output on each area for report, including micro bar charts

- London Array offshore windfarm. The planning application for the substation was refused. The client needed technical evidence for submission to the planning inspector with regard to reasons for alternative connections being discounted. GIS analysis and graphical output of various connection options

- The Crown Estate Round 3 Offshore Windfarm Connection Study. Prestigious project assessing offshore windfarm locations, capacities, and connection and cable routing options. Analysis and graphical output for report

- Distributed Generation on Employment Land. Project looking at the potential for generation on land in the North East designated for employment purposes. Analysis and graphical output for report. Output for the report included production of 330 PDF illustrations of buffer zones around the identified land blocks - these were generated programmatically, saving a huge amount of time

- Gunfleet Sands offshore windfarm. Cable route drawings for planning applications. Cable length / joint locations for costing / planning purposes

- Lake Erie offshore windfarm. Offshore cable conceptual design. Analysis of options and graphical output for report

- Planning for Low Carbon in County Durham. Graphical output in this report for Durham County Council

- Heatmapping County Durham. A detailed GIS analysis of heating loads to enable Durham County Council to assess the potential for district heating

What I Offer

I work on a contract (hourly rate) basis either at your premises or mine. I will also consider fixed price work providing that the scope of work can be suitably constrained.

There can be additional costs for the licensing of third party data - some Ordnance Survey data for instance. If you don't already hold the appropriate licence I can arrange short term cover (term of one year). This is usually the most flexible and cost effective option as it will often allow you to license just the coverage of data that you require.

Output is usually in the form of image files (JPG, GIF or PNG as appropriate). PDF is an alternative. You would also receive Shapefiles (SHP format) for any data created for your project.
