the plan
Okay, so the plan is to build this boat in our garage / barn building. Of course things aren't quite that simple...
How do you build a 4.3m boat in a room only 3.7m square? Diagonally of course. The hulls are built separately, utilising a deck jig that is slightly over 4.4m by 0.6m, which will just fit.
The cold... this is an old stone building, and boy, is it cold. Someone suggested building a polythene 'tent' inside the room, and heating that rather than the whole room. Great idea, but as far as possible I'm going to do all the machining first to save getting the polythene covered in dust.
Anyway, once all the materials have been gathered, the order of construction is something like this...
- Build benches / deckjigs
- Cut and shape ply components - hullskins and bulkheads
- Cut out deckjig hole
- Build polythene 'tent'
- Construct crossbeams
- Glue gunwhales to hullskins
- Stitch first hullskin
- Offer up and trim bulkheads
- Stitch bulkheads to hullskins, into deckjig
- Epoxy fillet hullskins and bulkheads together
- Build beam boxs into hull, fit central stringers
- Give the interior of hull two coats of epoxy
- Fit and epoxy deck
- Out of deckjig, fibreglass reinforce transom and keel joints
- Fill and fair up hull
- Repeat steps 7 to 15 for second hull
- Fit crossbeams to beamboxes
- Dry fit trampoline, fittings
- Make rudders and tillers
- Prime, undercoat, 2 x topcoat hulls and crossbeams
- Cut and stitch mainsail and jib
- Rig, and go sailing!
